Felix Meritis, located on Keizersgracht in Amsterdam, was originally opened in 1788 by a society of scientists, artists, entrepreneurs and thinkers. The building has long been recognised as a centre for culture and ideas, and its renovation required a sensitive balance of historical respect and contemporary vision.

The building has long been recognised as a centre for culture and ideas, and its renovation required a sensitive balance of historical respect and contemporary vision.
During my time at i29 interior architects, I contributed to the early design stages of the project to develop the concept narrative and schematic layouts for the building’s many functions. Every space was designed to reference a specific period in the building’s history, creating a layered interior where materiality, colour palettes and furniture selections reflected the evolution of the society that once animated the building.
My role focused on block planning, schematic layout and early sketches that informed the later, detailed design. This work helped set the framework for a distinct and charismatic interior concept, one that reinterprets the past to create a contemporary cultural venue.
